Douc & Bird Watching/Photogrpahy Tour - Son Tra (Da Nang) - 1/2 Day

The Red-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nemaeus) - the most beautiful Doucs - is the only Douc species recorded in all three countries of Indochina (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). It is classified as Endangered by the IUCN.  In Vietnam, the known distribution of this Douc ranges from Nghe An Province in the North to Gia Lai Province in the South. Son Tra Nature Reserve in Da Nang City contains the largest known population of Red-shanked Doucs in Vietnam.

Morning

We start at 5:30 AM in Hoi An or 6h:00 in Da Nang City and then transport to Son Tra Nature Resure by private car. We have soft breakfast & coffee on the way.

  • Morning: Walking on roads/trails to watch/photograph during morning time (7h30-10h30 AM): Walking on roads/trails to watch/photograph during mornoon time (7h30-11h AM) to watch/photograph Red-shanked Douc, Indochinese rhesus macaque (other birds/mammals: Squirrels, Sunbirds, Bubuls, Barbets,  reen Pigeons, Doves, Cuckoos, Bee-eaters, etc.). Then we go to the grasslands, mudflats, and wetlands near the Nature Reserve or Hoi An City for water birds, including Plovers, Sandpipers, Egrets, Stints, Terns, and Kingfishers. After that, we go back to Da Nang or Hoi An City.

Afternoon (Optional for Private tour)

We start at 13:30 PM in Hoi An or 14:00 PM in Da Nang City and then transport to Son Tra Nature Resure by private car. We have coffee on the way. 

  • Afternoon: Walking on roads/trails to watch/photograph during afternoon time (14h30-16h30 AM) to watch/photograph Red-shanked Douc, Indochinese rhesus macaque (other birds/mammals: Squirrels, Sunbirds, Bubuls, Barbets,  reen Pigeons, Doves, Cuckoos, Bee-eaters, etc.). Then we go to the grasslands, mudflats, and wetlands near the Nature Reserve or Hoi An City for water birds, including Plovers, Sandpipers, Egrets, Stints, Terns, and Kingfishers. After that, we go back to Da Nang or Hoi An City.

The Red-shanked Douc is the main target. We also have a good chance to watch/photograph other birds and mammals, including:

  •  Indochinese rhesus macaque
  • Crimson Sunbird
  • Olive-backed Sunbird
  • Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker
  • Bubuls (Stripe-throated Bulbul, Streak-eared Bulbul, Red-whiskered Bulbul)
  • Green-eared Barbet
  • Povers, Sandpipers, Egrets, Stints, Terns, and Kingfishers

Services: The tour includes a private car, drinks & snacks, insurance, tickets for entering the National Reserve, and a guide.

Equipment: The tour also includes binoculars or telescopes (if required).

Weather: Due to the change in the elevation range from the button (20 meters) to the top of the mountain (700 meters), the temperatures vary between 18°C-30°C accordingly. We may encounter heavy froggy and colder temperatures near or on the top of the mountain.

Topography: Mountainous areas with north slopes being steeper than those of the south. The peak of Son Tra has a height of 696 m a.s.l. The land area below 200 m a.s.l. accounts for 57.96% of the Nature Reserve. There is a road system that allows access to both low and high areas of the Nature Reserve.

Local culture:  The site is notable as a Natural Reserve and Tourism location to the nearby city.  Linh Ung Pagoda, within the Son Tra, is the largest pagoda in Central Vietnam.

Best time to go: December - October
